Just one list, I promise, no more...

Sorry I haven't posted in a bit (busy, busy, busy), but heres a highly original idea for all you christmas bloggers- my albums of the year list!!

Some very good stuff didn't make my list, which shows what a quality year its been.

In no particular order:

-------------------------------------------------
Bun B- Trill
Banger. I loved this album. Contains some of the most interesting production on any rap record this year. Stellar guest performances too. Great stuff.
Choice tracks:  Draped Up, Get Throwed (feat. Z-Ro, Young Jeezy, Pimp C, Jay- Z), Pushin (feat Young Jeezy and Scarface), Trill Recognize Trill (feat. Ludacris).
-------------------------------------------------
Mitchell Brothers- A Breath of Fresh Attire
Honest to god, I hated Harvey Nicks so much when I first heard it. Hated it. Serious. I got hold of the album and have been n'yaming humble pie ever since. A real album by real people about real life in London. Did a show with them earlier in the year, had a great time. Top blokes. Top album.
Choice Tracks: G.O.R.G.I.E (feat. The Streets), Someone Can't Look Us In The Eye, Smart B*stard (feat. The Streets), Wish I Did The Same
-------------------------------------------------
Beanie Sigel- The B.Coming
I've never quite been sure about Beans. I've always liked him, but I never thought he quite had what it took. I'm as suprised as anyone that The B.Coming made my list, but its solid backbone and melancholy temprement made it one of the Rocs' best releases to date. Very dark, very soulful. Been bumping it for months now.
Choice Tracks: Feel It In The Air, Gotta Have It (feat. Peedi Peedi and Twista), Purple Rain (feat. Bun B), Flat Line (feat. Peedi Peedi)
-------------------------------------------------
Mike Jones- Who Is Mike Jones?
Realy and truly, my brother was into Mike Jones waaaaaaaay before me, but I'd caught on before his album droped. I was stunned by a) how completely fucking bezerk the production is, and b) how much joke Mike gives me. Dude is so regular, it cracks me up. My introduction to Swisha House. I'm glad to know them.
Choice Tracks: Still Tippin' (feat. Paul Wall and Slim Thug), Know What I'm Saying? (feat. Bun B), Back Then, Turning Lane...
-------------------------------------------------
Kanye West- Late Registration
Bit of a no brainer so I won't dwell on it. However, he has surpassed himself, and he set the bar pretty damn high last time. Not just one of the best producers, now hes one of the best rappers too. Yeah, thats right. Fuck it. I said it.
Choice Tracks: Heard Em' Say (feat. Adam Levine), Gold Digger (feat. Jamie Foxx), Drive Slow (feat. Paul Wall), Gone (feat Consequence and Cam'Ron)
-------------------------------------------------
Cage- Hells Winter
I've been a Cage fan for a minute, so I had high hopes for this album. Its dark, unsettling autobiographical journey through Chris Palko's life. The sober Cage could be a force to be reckoned with next year and I wouldn't be suprised if a major (finally) picks him up.
Choice Tracks: Shoot Frank (feat. Daryl Palumbo), Scenester, Subtle Art Of The Breakup Song, Lord have Mercy
-------------------------------------------------
DangerDoom- The Mouse and the Mask
Well, I hate MF Doom and don't have much time for Danger Mouse, but this, I like. I'm confused and starting to upset myself.
Choice Tracks: Sofa King, The Mask (feat. Ghostface Killah), Mincemeat
-------------------------------------------------
Kano- Home Sweet Home
Sooo much character in this l.p. I like it for similar reasons to the Mitchells album, but this has much more of a commercial edge. He does the "cocky"-rap thing better than 9 out of 10 UK rappers. Geat pop music, insanely skillful writing. Feeling it.
Choice Tracks: Ps and Qs, Reload It, Nobody Don't Dance No More
-------------------------------------------------
Memphis Bleek- 534
CRIMINALLY SLEPT ON!!! Damn, 1 classic single away from greatness. What if Bleek had got Feel It In The Air? All 534 lacks is the finishing knock-out pop-punch that The B.Coming had. The album is a slick, shiny affair, with 9th Wonder doing some of his best work on the panels to date. Go buy this, then you can be an arsehole next Summer when your mates realise they slept on something major.
Choice Tracks: Dear Summer (feat. Jay Z), First, Last, Only (feat. M.O.P), Oh Baby (feat Young Gunz), Straight Path
-------------------------------------------------
Lil Wayne- Tha Carter, Vol II
Hot Boyz were wack. Now weve got that out the way I can confirm that The Carter II picks up exactly where the first part finished off. Hard, hard core with more of a soul-beat feel, but still crazy aggresive. Feeling Wayne more than anyone right now. So very sick. Don't be ig'nant people, you will regret it.
Choice Tracks: Fly In, Fire Man, On the Block, Shooter
-------------------------------------------------
Why Lout?- It's Been Time! The Official Mixtape
Yeah, thats right. What? What? What'cha say? Shut the fuck up.
Choice Tracks: Gather Round, My Oh My, Steves At It Again, 10,000 Mishaps. To be honest, it's all banging. You should run out and buy that ASAP. Serious. What'cha say? Eh? Shut the fuck up.
-------------------------------------------------
Art Brut- Bang Bang Rock and Roll
Mates of mine, so I won't say too much except its brilliant. Germany knows. Say no more.
Choice Tracks: Formed a band, My little brother, Emily Kane, Moving to L.A

Glasswerk Review

"Highly politcal and with intelligent sampling (from The Clash to London art-rockers Art Brut) this record is something the British Hip-Hop scene should and will be proud of."

Got a nice review from Glasswerk. Read the whole review at Glasswerks.co.uk.

‘It’s Been Time!!’ is Why Lout?’s second full length mixtape. The first ‘ ‘Cause It’s Time!’ ran the pirate airwaves and car stereos of South London last summer, it was so well received that it was ranked one of the ‘Top 10 Street Disciples’ (a top 10 of artist mixtapes) in Hip-Hop Connection Magazine the list including 50 Cent, Kanye West, DJ Premier, Saigon and Jadakiss. The core element of Why Lout? (Marvin The Martian, Jack Nimble and Pixel) took the brand on to create a more complete and focussed mixtape and enrolled long time collaborator, Producer Dego brown (who handled the majority of the C.D’s production) to complete the four man line-up. So in January 2005 Why Lout? started writing, producing and recording the C.D that they had always intended on filling. Four months into the mixtape Jack Nimble came across a sample that would achieve mainstream radio play across the world, see coverage in Artrocker and the NME (it was included “In the NME Stereo”) and would also see Why Lout? Perform to a packed KoKo (the Old Camden Palace). The sample was Art-Rock band Art Brut’s then single, a tribute to lead singer Eddie Argos’ first girlfriend ‘Emily Kane’. Why Lout? Jack produced a sharp, grimy and altogether confusing instrumental, to which Marvin The Martian wrote a follow-up to Eddie Argos’ twisted love story. Marvin’s a tale of a man obsessed with Emily Kane to the point of stalking. The song was made available as a free download on Artrocker.com and has since been hosted on several MP3 websites, it has to this date, been downloaded 30,000+ times. It was played on Phil Jupitus’ BBC 6Music show, John Kennedy’s XFM show and on radio shows as far as New Zealand, Canada, Australia and Germany. Why Lout?’s goal for ‘It’s Been Time!!’ was to portray a more politically aware, more soulful and more focussed independent sound then British Hip-Hop/ Grime Music has come to be known for. Whether it came from sampling Nouvelle Vague’s remake of the famous Clash song ‘Guns Of Brixton’ to make the ‘Guns Of Brixton Why Lout? Mix’ (Marvin The Martian has a solo ‘Guns Of Brixton’ to be released through a pioneering deal with Universal in 2006) and cover the rising gun crime in their home-town of Brixton. Or ‘Road Circles’ which features the tape’s only outside contributor Scarecrow (Also featured on ‘Cause It’s Time!’ hailing from Wilesden North London) who goes back to back with Pixel trying to explain (without justifying) the mentality of today’s common criminal. Why Lout? Attempt to be a mouthpiece of a generation, discussing and digesting the ills and positives of London life. Jack Nimble steps up to the mic for the first time in his career (having produced the whole of Why Lout?’s first mixtape) to tell the story of his friend Steve, the 19 year old self-destructive cocaine addict on ‘Steve’s At it Again’. It encompasses something that has been very important to Why Lout? In the production of this C.D; LONDON. Best exemplified by Pixel’s self-produced ‘Fire Of London’, in which Pixel attempts to define himself and his nature through his city’s buildings, people, pace and history. Blog Attack!!!

Blogspirit got attacked last night, and as a result, I've lost a couple of months pictures, replaced by that ugly"red-cross-in-a-box" bullshit. I will NOT be replacing them as that is a long ting, a "lay-lay" if you will.

I'll try to get rid of those boxes when I can be flucked.

Words from the Brut

Eddie:

I begin to feel unwell; we are playing with Darren from Hefner tonight (who I’m a big fan of) in front of loads of people so I put it down to nerves, as well as Keith, Vincent Vincent and the Villains and Why Lout? The Grime collective who did a version of ‘Emily Kane’ play, they are ace I want to join them nearly as much as Mike wants to join Vincent Vincent and the Villains.

Chris:

When I was a kiddo I spent a lot of Tuesday nights at what was the called the ‘Camden Palace’ in attendance at the regular club night, ‘Feet First’, cheap entry, cheap booze, band on at midnight and a good night had by all. So after seeing many, many acts here, I was looking forward to taking to the stage myself. Wow! I’d never seen it before, but the backstage area at Koko was incredible, a waiting room before going on stage and an entire suite upstairs with all sorts of facilities. We had a few guests with us tonight helping us fill a massive hour and a half set, Darren from Hefner and ‘Why Lout?’ who infamously created the Hip hop remix of ‘Emily Kane’, so the copious dressing rooms were buzzing with an odd mix of individuals.

Whats my name?

MIKE JONES!!!
Got into this album over the last few weeks. Crazy original. Chopped and screwed version is a mind-fuck too. Don't sleep.

Master Class

You should probably know about these two already, but if you don't, don't waste time reading this, go cop, chief.

Both highly concept driven, I had previously chosen A Long Hot Summer as my favourite, but over the last few days I rediscovered Disposable Arts and ended up playing it 7 times in 36 hours. Ace is a REAL vetran, but spits every track like its his debut.

Rap classics that 90% of rap fans will probably never hear. Be in the winning 10%.

Hell's Winter

I've played it a few times now. It's pretty damn good. Overall its an improvement on "Movies...", but its not quite as complete as I would have hoped. He still misses that "everyman" track, but he gets very close. "Scenester" is superb, as is most of the album, but I feel it just falls short of the mark required to be a "big boy".

Fine, fine album none the less. Buy it, he deserves to get paid off of this one.

I, Robot

Scarey life-like androids are upon us!!

"We have found that people forget she is an android while interacting with her "- Prof Hiroshi Ishiguro

Read about it at BBC.co.uk.

Oh yeah, Tin Pan Alley after party...

Damn, been so busy I forgot to say a little something about the Tin Pan Alley festival after party a few weeks ago. We were booked last minute, so we had to cram a couple of rehearsals into 30 odd hours. Pix was pretty damn unwell, but we rehearsed intensely anyway as we were doing a song we had never done live before (It's in Your Nature). If you’ve heard it, I'm sure you can imagine how tricky that one is live.

So, we went to the festival in the stunning sunshine. We spent a little time with the punters watching a band whose name I never caught then blagged half a dozen backstage passes off the Artrocker squad. We proceeded to mingle with a gaggle of black clad "rock" cheerleaders (nice girls) and casually schmooze with Art Brut while the guy on stage was slow clapped and told to “piss off” by sections of the crowd. Pissed. The Brut went up, they were great. Crowd went ape shit. We reckoned it was time to pop over to the venue to sound check. It took the best part of an hour to get in, but we were greeted by the very finest air conditioning the West End could provide. In that heat, it was appreciated. We checked the venue out, and I realised I’d been there before, although I couldn’t place who it was I saw. The backline was late, so none of the bands had sound checked yet. Since we don’t use a backline, we got our check in first. The PA was superb. There was a moment where we all looked at each other and silently acknowledged the sound quality and said a prayer to the gods of working monitors. So, all checked up, we went and lined our stomach’s and hung out in Goodge Street for a bit before heading back to the venue for some free shampers served by Las Vegas showgirls. We sunk a few, got changed and made our way to the stage. 10 seconds into the set, the bar area began to empty and we were aware that the dance floor had filled, like, REALLY filled. So of course, we cranked up our stage bubble a notch to acknowledge the reactive crowd. Pix said a few words about the recent events in London before performing “Fire of London”, which was pretty special. It turned into a real party vibe. Free champagne flowing, Why Lout? Flowing, the air-con flowing, people brucking out like the floor was hot. Every song was a pleasure to deliver, but by the time we reached the climax (Stay off the Kane), the room was at fever pitch, assisted by the fact that Ian Art Brut was spazzing out at the front and Freddie Art Brut and Ed Idiot were having a bit of dance. It felt like the whole crowd was singing with us. A very, very special experience. We finished up, soaked up the applause and dipped off the stage for more free champers and pizza. Cheers to the Brut, Borderline, Artrocker and everyone that danced with us that night.

Hells Winter

I got a promo copy of the new Cage album last night (cheers Dego). I'm only listening to it for the 2nd time as I type this, but its making a really good impression on me. I'll say more when I've given it a few listens.

"Then I changed my name to Cage like Nick Coppola..."

This is a great interview. Cage saying all the things I want to hear. Check it out at allhiphop.com.

For those that don't know, Movies for the Blind is criminally slept on. Classic in my opinion.

I've got a little story to tell...

I've been trying to tell this story for about a month, and with Ben and Dego's permission, I will now do so.

Ben, Dego and myself were due at the studio one sunny Saturday, jumped on the 250 bus a trundled up Brixton Hill. We reached the point where Brixton becomes Streatham (just before Brixton Bus Garage, which for some reason is in the Streatham side, but anyhoo) when we noticed a local crack head, doing his beg thang.

We all knew this dude, he's a regular, so much so, we refer to him as "*****'s dad", you know, for jokes. For ease, we will call him Muller. Read on...

So, Ben says: "That guys got himself a fruit corner". For some reason, this alone was enough to get us chorteling.

"Oh no" Dego whispered under his breath, "Jack, I think he's putting the youghart on his head!" Cue explosive laughter from the three of us, proceeded by continued myrth as he then continued to rub the "fruit corner" portion into his bald cranium.

And so the bus continued along the road to the studio, us wiping the tears from our eyes, catching our breath and trying to compose ourselves. About 100 yards up the road, a 159 routemaster pulled out in front of us (the jump on/ jump off type they are currently phasing out. Boo, Hiss!). Clinging to the pole and striking a superman-esque pose, was Muller, proudly gliding into the horizon, yoghart flicking off his slick head and into the street while sipping a white lightning.

This had us on the floor. By this point, most of the upper deck of the bus getting in the on the act. The 159 stopped, and Muller stepped off the bus and took a sip of his cider. Still holding the pole, the 159 began to eek away. Muller, determined not to let the bus slip away with out him, began to chase the route master, still holding the pole and juggling his white lightning. After running 30-40 yards after the bus, still atached, he went for broke and tried to jump on the back of the bus. Needless to say, he missed. An explosion of strawberrys, plain yoghart and white lightning ensued as his face bounced off the pavement in front of us. Shit was HYSTERICAL!

We talked to him the other day. His face was a little fucked up, but he was cool. God, I wish you were there!

I'M BACK!!! (like I never left this bitch!!)

Sorry I haven't posted in a while, I've had a lot on, what with my city getting blown the fuck up on a near fortnightly basis. David Banner put it best: "I ain't NEVER scared!". (Actually, it was BoneCrusher, good looking out Tego!)

So, I live on the Stockwell/ Brixton border (as you may or may not know), but I feel like I've been living in Basra recently. On July 7th, when the initial bombs went off, Stockwell was sealed off within minutes of the confirmation. Bus' were searched, sniffer dogs deployed and vast amounts of police assigned to both the Brixton and Stockwell Mosques. BUT the media never reported the shenanigans in South London, obviously focusing on the atrosities elsewhere in the capital. SO when the tradgic shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes happened in Stockwell tube station, some of us were less suprised than others.

So, apparently, terror suspects were being monitored in the block of flats that Jean de Menezes was seen to exit that day.

BUT if you refer back to the intense police and security scrum that ensued in SW4 on 7/7, you start to ask questions. How much did the security services know? If the targets were deemed such a threat that Mr Menezes had to be shot 8 times, where are said Stockwell targets now? Did they have information directly linking the Stockwell surveilance to the bombings? Why was Stockwell cordened off on 7/7? Why didn't/ don't the media report what transpired in Stockwell on 7/7?

And despite the fact that the failed bombs (two weeks later) had a resemblense to the failed shoe bomber Richard Green, a one time Brixton resident, no South London connections are being made.

To further intrigue my South London therom, me and Dego got caught up in the Saturday bomb scare at Brixton tube station while attempting to get to the studio.

Anyway, arrests are being made in the Midlands today, so hopefuly my questions will be answered sooner rather than later.

Sorry if that was a bit gripey. Blame the weather.

(Sure enough, anti-terror raids were executed in Stockwell the night of writting. Maybe I wasn't the only one thinking it.)
